Anti-Wrinkle Treatments V Dermal Fillers

Anti-Wrinkle injections are amongst the most popular non-surgical aesthetic procedure in the UK. The injections works on the upper part of the face to relax the muscles and smooth out the skin, although they can also be used to treat gummy smiles, smokers lines and to slim the jaw line. Anti-wrinkle injections work to reduce the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles, in particular frown lines, forehead lines, crows feet, bunny lines and top lip lines.

Dermal fillers are different as they are designed to fill out hollows and wrinkles without treating the muscle underneath. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) fillers replace lost collagen for improved skin elasticity and a more youthful appearance. Dermal Fillers are typically used to create volume in cheeks, to lift and shape the brows, boost thin lips and enhance the chin and jawlines. Dermal fillers can also be used in non-surgical rhinoplasty to even out bumps and create a beautiful nose.

The key difference is that dermal fillers work to replace lost volume and plump up the skin whilst anti-wrinkle injections work on specific areas and target all the way down to the core of the muscle for long-term effects.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

Dermal fillers are made from Hyaluronic Acid (HA), a substance that is naturally produced by your body, but this slows down as we age, leaving our skin looking thinner and less hydrated. Collagen provides our skin with elasticity and strength but, as we age, our body's collagen production also slows, meaning that our skin can lose volume and we develop lines and wrinkles. Dermal fillers are injected into the desired areas to boost the skin's natural collagen production and hydrate the skin, leaving you looking more plumped and refreshed.

Which Areas Can Be Treated With Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are often used to smooth and lift the skin on the face, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, reshaping the nose, contouring the cheeks, chin and jawline, and plumping the lips.  In addition, they can be used to smooth wrinkled hands and on the decolletage.  A full list of areas that can be treated is as follows:

Laughter lines and crow’s feet around the eyes
Frown lines between the eyebrows
Tear troughs beneath the eyes
Fine lines around the lips
Lips - to add volume and shape
Wrinkles and lines on the cheeks
Chin indentations
Back of hands
Decolletage.

Is Everyone Suitable For Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are suitable for most people. The body's collagen production starts to decline from the age of 25, so this treatment would be recommended for most ages too. You should avoid dermal fillers if you have a known allergy to hyaluronic acid products.  In addition, if you have bleeding disorders, active skin diseases, infection or tumors near the area to be treated, you should consult your GP before having a dermal filler treatment.

Are Dermal Filler Injections Painful?

You may feel some mild discomfort when the filler is being injected into the face, although we can apply a topical numbing cream to the area we are going to treat. Your DNA Aesthetics specialist will discuss this with you at your initial consultation.

Can I Go Out After My Dermal Filler Treatment?

To enjoy the full benefits of your dermal filler treatment we do not recommend a night on the town. The following aftercare advice should be taken and your aesthetician will explain these at your appointment also.

For 6 hours following your dermal fillers treatment you should not wear makeup
Do not touch the injected area and remain in an upright position - do not lie down
For 48 hours after the treatment, you should not drink alcohol
Avoid making extreme facial expressions
Avoid heat-inducing activities including vigorous exercise, hot showers, saunas or sun beds
For 7 days after the treatment, you should not take long-haul flights
For 7 days you should avoid facials and rubbing the treated area.

What Happens If I Don't Like My Dermal Filler Look?

We recommend allowing 4 weeks to see the full effects of your fillers but, if you are not in love with your new look, you can book in with us to safely dissolve your filler.
